Largest superyacht is launched

The staggering 180-metre Project Azzam has been launched by Lürssen – the biggest superyacht in the world, surpassing Roman Abramovich’s 165-metre Eclipse. She was seen earlier this week being transported on a floating dock, where she has been undergoing final finishing since the yacht’s bow section was attached. The yacht first broke cover last summer, when she hit the water without her bow section.

“When she is delivered later this year, she will have been in build for only three years following one year of engineering, She truly represents another milestone in not only our history but yachting history as well,” says Lürssen managing partner Peter Lürssen.

Project Azzam is designed by Nauta Yacht Design, with an interior by Christophe Leoni. Among her many stand-out features is an open-plan main salon with a length of 29 metres. She will cruise in excess of 30 knots, powered by a combination of two gas turbines and two diesel engines with a total of 70,000kW, or 94,000 horses. The project was managed by Burgess. “We are proud to be associated with this extraordinary and unique project as the owner’s technical consultants. The construction of this yacht with its highly complex technical features has been extremely demanding and challenging. It has been a real team effort between all the professionals involved including ourselves, the builder and the designers,” says Burgess CEO Jonathan Beckett.
Project Azzam
Project Azzam’s build team was put together by Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi. Under his leadership the original concept of the yacht was developed, starting with the overall requirements with regards to general layout, size and performance and exterior style. His brief was to build a large luxury yacht with an innovative and timeless design that would be able to travel at high speed in warm and shallow waters, while providing luxurious and sophisticated accommodation to the guests.
